Macomb County Jail, MI

The existing county jail consists of a number of interconnected buildings constructed over a period of 50 years. P/BA was tasked with defining the future needs for the jail system with a focus on providing appropriate mental health and medical beds. In addition, a key goal of the master plan was to create a consolidated intake processing center including a robust pre-trial services program to assist in the diversion of new arrestees from the jail. We also were tasked with developing the operational and architectural program for a facility that will eventually house up to 1,976 beds with 276 beds dedicated for the treatment of inmates with serious mental illness, medical detoxification and in need of skilled nursing care. A key policy decision was that all future housing would operate following the principles of direct supervision as a change from the current jail, which is all indirect supervision. We are in the final stages of the master planning process and currently performing schematic design review as part of a team led by Partners in Architecture, PLC.
